it’s time for them to do a dang squirrel girl movie already!!

If you’re here, it’s likely because you, like me, visited “squirrelgirlmovie.com” or “unbeatablesquirrelgirlmovie.com” in the hopes that you might learn that a movie starring your favorite girl-who-is-also-a-squirrel is in the works. Unfortunately, as far as I’m aware, it’s not. Which is a shame because Squirrel Girl is not just undefeated all-time against major villains in the Marvel universe, she’s also incredibly unique when it comes to superheroes.

Some heroes break the fourth wall like Deadpool, aware of the inherent ridiculousness of (and problems with!) superhero media, and some, like Spider-Man are unapologetic in their normalcy, finding dramatic tension in balancing the stresses of life as a young adult with those of saving the world on a regular basis. But Squirrel Girl is unlike any other superhero (especially her current iteration in the North/Henderson comics) because she does both, all while being canonically one of the most powerful heroes in the universe.

And while she started out as a joke, in newer iterations of the character the reason she’s able to defeat villains like Galactus is her emotional intelligence. Because she’s an avid consumer of media, she can act as a dramatic stand-in for the audience, knowing what they know about major villains and heroes. This, combined with the fact that her powers are relatively weak, means that when Squirrel Girl finds success, it’s always either through a tense hostage-negotiation-level conversation, or through a wildly innovative and creative use of her powers.

That’s to say nothing of the fact that Squirrel Girl is an incredibly well-written character in most of her iterations, one of the few characters in the Marvel universe outside Miles Morales that actually talks like a young person. It’s time for a Gen Z character to get its due in the MCU. Squirrel Girl is the hero we need right now. Make the movie, y’all.
